Unfortunately, instances of implicit bias, discrimination, and harassment persist in our daily lives. If left unchecked, such behaviors can negatively influence many aspects of one's overall health and wellbeing. When we experience or witness a hurtful behavior, we sometimes question whether we should say or do anything. Even if we want to act, we may not have the tools to intervene effectively. At APTA Colorado, we value inclusion and accountability and want to ensure that leaders have the tools they need to become upstanders - individuals who disrupt hurtful behaviors and promote inclusive excellence. This interactive session is designed to strengthen individuals' capacity to recognize and mitigate the effects of bias across professional settings.

Speaker:
Dawn Magnusson, PT, PhD serves as an Associate Professor, Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement, and Director of the DPT-MPH Dual Degree Program for the University of Colorado Physical Therapy Program. She obtained a PhD in Population Health Sciences from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in General Academic Pediatrics (with an emphasis in Health Disparities Research) through the Department of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her primary teaching responsibilities fall under the Health Promotion/Wellness and Professional Development umbrellas. Dawn’s research leverages community-based participatory and emancipatory research principles within a population health framework to understand and address health disparities.
